The Police University College engages in applied research and development, serving the planning and development of policing and internal security, and the education at the University College. Research produces scientific information on policing and the operating environment. The development function is responsible for project management and providing assistance with project planning and grant applications. More than 20 full-time experts are employed in research and development positions.

Transcrime is the Research Centre on Transnational Crime of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan. The centre, funded in 1994, is directed by Professor Ernesto Savona and has a staff of more than 25 people made up of academic researchers, contract researchers, Ph.D. candidates, interns and administrative personnel. Transcrime employs an integrated approach to study complex criminal phenomena (criminology, law, economics, statistics, forensic accounting). The main research topics of the centre are organised crime, economic crime and urban crime.
